Dystopian Movies: An Exemplary Trailer
V for Vendetta. James McTeigue. R. 2005
In a fascist, totalitarian society, a vengeful vigilante, V (Hugo Weaving), and a young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman), work to end the injustice by blowing up Parliament.
Throughout the trailer of V for Vendetta, James McTeigue, the director, uses music, sound effects and editing to create an exemplary trailer. By using text that comes on the screen and audio clips from the movie, it is explained that the United Kingdom is living in a totalitarian and dystopian society; we're shown clips of people being beaten, and of hundreds of soldiers marching down the street. The main character, Evey, is shown in the first few clips, establishing her as the protagonist, and she and V, the other protagonist, are the only characters whose whole faces are clearly shown multiple times.
The color scheme of the trailer, which mostly has red, black and gray, also gives the trailer an air of violence, threat and fear. There are a lot of short, quick shots, adding to the tension and confusion. The music also gets louder and softer when it's appropriate, allowing the viewer to hear the spoken lines from the movie. For my trailer, I think I will use the idea of using specific colors in my trailer to evoke certain emotions. I also want to be able to effectively display my society without giving away too much of the plot. Hopefully my trailer will be close to exemplary for a dystopian trailer.
